Chapter 16

Lilly sat looking out the window of the plane. She knew that she needed to see Marcus first, before she did anything else. They had a lot to talk about. He had a lot of explaining to do, and for once she planned to tell him how she felt, and how he’d hurt her. Most of the time, Lilly kept her feelings in check and tried to stay emotionless, but too much had happened.

If her life was changing then she wanted to start expressing herself and be heard. She needed for people to know when they hurt her or she didn’t like something. Letting things roll off your back was great sometimes but there were times when you need to let people know how you felt or they steamroll you.

“I know I shouldn’t tell you this, but I think you need to know.” Lilly looked over at Holden, who was sitting down across from her. Knox had gone to the bedroom to take a shower. He didn’t have any clothes with him at her apartment, so he’d waited until they got on the plane and in the air.

“Tell me what?” Lilly asked, curious.

“Just how much Knox is giving up to be with you.”

Lilly’s eyebrow arched, waiting for the speech on how wrong she was for him. “He will never want another woman but you, Lilly. Know that first. But before we left, he sent a letter to the king and queen saying that he was giving up his birthright as the future king in order to be with his mate.”

Lilly jolted upright. “But…but why? Why would he do that?”

“Because you’re his mate, silly girl, and once we find our true mate, we’ll do anything to be with them and protect them. Do you see what I’m saying? He loves you, and will give it all up if necessary to be with you,” Holden explained.

“How do I accept that? How do you expect me to take that, Holden?” Lilly swallowed hard, trying to get this straight in her mind. “This was just sprung on me. My life has changed dramatically in only a few days. Now everyone will blame me for what he decided to do, without even discussing this with me. Dammit, Holden. Do you think I’m just supposed to let this roll off my back and say, ‘oh well, lucky me’?”

Lilly jumped up and started pacing. She was mad now. How could he? Well, why should she be surprised? The man has done nothing but try and control everything she did, and now this. Oh, Lilly would be the most hated woman in New Hope.

“What’s wrong?” Knox was by her side.

She didn’t know if she could control her anger anymore. This was her breaking point. “How could you do that? You don’t know what you did. They’ll all hate me now.” Lilly couldn’t hold back the tears anymore. She was so tired of being strong. She had nobody to turn to. They’d despise her more than ever now. Lilly would be the reason the prince turned his back on his country.
